Maryland Huntography 2013: Dirtnap #6

Well after much waiting I finally got a good shot at a big doe after many unsuccessful hunts. I’m pretty happy to have shot this doe as she will go to a good friend that needed the meat. Awesome experience as usual, I love outwitting these big donkeys. Almost as much fun as going after big bucks. Get after EM hunters!

BBD For Close Friend Dale Emerson

Another great weekend in southern Maryland with the boys. I just love going down there as it always feels your back in time during the good ole days. This past weekend was no different. We always head in down Friday evening, stop at the Road House for dinner and then chill at the hotel that evening. The Best Western in LaPlata is a pretty awesome place, great people, good rates, clean, and they have one hell of good breakfast for hunters. I’ve never been to a place that has a full breakfast out at 3:30 in the morning. We were down hoping for some good rut action this weekend but they weren’t hot and heavy yet. Good number of deer seen but it just seems slow to me. My good friend Dale Emerson had no complaints as he was able to harvest a nice buck over the weekend. Congrats Dale I’m very happy you finally got a your buck.

Big Buck Success For Fellow Marylanders In Ohio

My good buddy Hank Norris and his son just got back from a hunt in Ohio with a truck full of big bucks. Hank and his son were both fortunate enough to harvest a giant buck each while in the great state of Ohio. Congratulations guys, glad you were there to represent Maryland and show EM how it’s done. Here is a picture of Hanks buck then his sons.

Big Buck Success For Fellow Marylander Tim Babikow

All summer long my good buddy Tim Babikow had been watching a bachelor group of bucks on his farm. As things normally go in the farm the buck started to disappear and sightings were down. Tim unfortunately wasn’t able to catch up with one during bow season, but it all changed this weekend. Last Thursday Maryland’s early ML season opened on Thursday but Tim wasn’t able to get down until Saturday night. He was fortunate enough to bring his son Nate who told his dad, don’t shoot a doe get a big buck. Well that is exactly what Tim did , he put down one of the shooters he had been watching all summer. Very proud of you buddy, that’s a nice buck you got there. Congrats to my man Tim on a great buck. If you know this guy, you know he really deserved it.

Maryland Huntography 2013: Dirtnap #5

After smoking two doe yesterday with my bow, I was back at this morning with the ole smoke pole. I got set up an hour and a half before light cause I know the deer are there and it’s real sensitive spot. I could hear things moving through all morning in the dark as I anxiously awaited light. Now sometimes it’s hard but sometimes it’s easy and with that being said here came a doe walking through at 50 yards. When she stopped I took aim, fired, and off she went as I saw the smoke clear. Yes I had smoked her with the smoke pole haha. So far so good this early ML season, I got 3 down with my last hunt tonight. Stay tuned there may be another Dirtnap handed out.

Congrats to Peyton Emerson On A Giant Swamp Donkey

One of my best friends Peyton Emerson harvested one of the biggest doe’s I’ve even seen yesterday. He tells me he was buck hunting but when she came back for the fourth time snorting it was all he could take. Congrats buddy I’m glad you gave that smart old swamp donkey a Dirtnap.

Double Down: Maryland Huntography 2013 Dirtnaps #3 & 4

It is early muzzleloader season in Maryland but right now I’m short time so I went to a quick bow spot this morning. I wish I could of been out with the ML but then again I love hunting with ole faithful my bow. I slipped out early to a local neighborhood spot I have that backs to big woods making it a little better than it should be. Being that I was around 100 yards from houses the bow is ideal for this. I got set up nice and early as this was the first hunt at this spot this season. About 10 minutes before shooting light I heard some movement and saw the outline of a deer below. Now only if she would hang around until legal shooting light. Just as I was able to shoot she had made her mind up to leave, but that slight hesitation gave me a chance to draw my bow and strike her down.

It was early and that was quick and quiet so I decided to wait and see what happened. A had a few fawns feed through about 15 minutes later and as they were leaving I saw another big doe working up the ridge my way. Took her nearly 20 minutes to get there as she was old, smart, and cautious as all hell. Just as she was getting ready to cross into my shooting lane she got a whiff of the arrow from the first deer and freaked. You how they jump back, legs all spread, yeah that was her. Same thing, as she turned to leave I drew my bow back and sent my arrow crashing right behind the near shoulder. She was dead and didn’t even know it.

Neither of the deer were any match for the spitfires I sent through them as they both only went 50 yards. I feel pretty good taking two mature doe with my bow during ML season. I know the Apparition Scents I had out helped keep the deer calm enough that they didn’t bust out of there right away before I could shoot. This hunts goes to show you that with a proper setup on a small property anything is possible.

Maryland Huntography 2013 Dirtnap #2

After a very difficult start to the season and also not recovering my first bull elk ever I decided to let the hammer down on this buck. He’s not the biggest but he is 4.5yrs old and my freezer was getting low. I couldn’t be happier to have cleanly harvested him with my bow after the rough start to my season. Time to finally get back into deer slayin as I usually do. I’ve been pretty down since losing my elk but it’s now time to turn things around. Let’s do this, Maryland deer beware. Here’s my buck from today.
