South Carolina Opener Coming Quickly

As I sit here on the beach celebrating my wife’s birthday on our family vacation I can’t help thinking about hunting on Friday. I will be leaving Hilton Head to make an hour and a half drive NW to Buck Run to start off my 2014-15 hunting season. I’ve been going now with a group of buddies for 6 years now and I can’t think of a better way to start the season. I can only hope to be half as lucky as I was last year as I harvested a super velvet buck in 2013.

Redemption Weekend

So with the Maryland hunting season coming down to the wire I come home from work this past week to one of my freezers shut down. Wow as if I didn’t have enough on my plate already I really didn’t need that to deal with. The worst part about it is it was the one holding all my backstraps and about fifty pounds of ground. Oh well life goes on and now I really had my word cut out for me to replace that meat.

Having now time to get in the woods last week, Saturday morning came more slowly than ever but once I got into stand my nerves settled and the world seemed to slow down. As I watched the sun come up all I could do was hope I would get lucky enough to tag a deer. The morning was slow nothing seen over the first hour and then all of a sudden I heard ice crack and to my surprise there was a deer crossing the creek headed my way. I can’t remember being that excited but I carefully readied myself and waited as she was heading my way. As I watched her move my way my leg started shaking with anticipation, and as she got in my shooting window I released my arrow hitting true. She had no idea what hit her as I watched her run 60 yards and gall over. Not only was this deer meat for the freezer she was my 30th of the season and that tied my all time best. As I celebrated to myself a small buck ran a doe by me which brought me back to reality. I watched as he chased her all around and finally he ran her where she didn’t want to be and he no longer had a doe to chase around. Yes, another deer and I had broken my owner record. This weekend couldn’t of started any better.

Later that afternoon I climbed back into stand as planned hoping to keep pace with the morning. Nothing but walkers, hikers, and dogs till the last hour. As I was loosing hope I could see some deer moving my way. As they feed in I fixated on the bigger and when the time was right I took my shot. I heard run off and crash in the bushes. Oh yea I was on a roll, so I decided to wait and see if any more would come through. Well God must have been looking over my should that day cause here came three more big doe. As before I waited for my mark and let my arrow roar. I watched as she ran off and piled up bout 70 yards away. I was in disbelief, did I really just shoot 4 deer in one day after the week my freezer broke. How awesome is that. It just goes to show that no matter how bad things seem its up to you to go out there and turn things around. No one controls your destiny but you. Its your life so make it great. In the end it all worked out, I was able to recoup some meat I lost and I also was able to help some friends out that wanted some meat as well. Alls well that ends well.

Be positive, stay strong, and hunt hard.

Dirtnap Number 28

I went back to a property that I havent hunted since deertour to give it a sit. The hunting has been slow lately so I figured I’d hit one of my honey holes to try and break the funk. After only being on stand for ten minutes the deer began to move. I passed up some smaller ones early and finally had a group of nice does come by. Didnt get the biggest one only cause I shot the one with the most attitude. there’s always that 1 doe that pisses you off you know. it’s always a great accomplishment when you’re able to take out one of those smart doe. That makes 28 for me this year and Im hoping to break my record of 30 last year. Stay tuned and see if I do it. Also please share your outdoor stories with us here. Thanks and shoot straight.

Deertour Starts off Right in Maryland

A big congrats to my buddy Shane Muller as he smoked this nice little buck this morning as Deertour has fallen upon Maryland. Shane, myself, and the godfather of Huntography Rudy, all set up within 10yds of everyone as we successfully harvested a deer with three people in a tree. It was such a magnificant morning as I watched Shane smoke his buck a mere 10 yds from me. He stuck the deer perfectly in the lungs, abd he only ran 60yds. Stay tuned for more exciting action right here in Maryland.

Back In Action

Post written by Field Editor Shane Muller

I am back in action everyone! I have had a busy summer with working and baseball, and now I am back to the school grind! But with hunting season right around the corner nothing can keep me away! My dad and hunting buddy have put in a lot of work on our piece of property and got some stands up in some good spots that I think will bring us really good success this season. They had also put minerals and feeders out to almost all of our stands and hung a camera in a hot travel area! We have been keeping up with checking the camera as much as we can but being as we are all very busy it gets tough. But we have gotten some great velvet pictures so far! We just recently got a picture of a buck we are calling “Nomad”, it looks to be either a big 10 or 9.

But we have not seen him before, so he is at the top of our hit-list this season! But we also have pictures of some good young bucks that could be decent in the next few years as long as we do our quality deer management right.

I just wanted to check in and let everyone know what was up here in my part of Maryland! Hope everyone is well and I wish you luck this season!

MY BEST MD BOW SEASON START EVER!

Bow season in Maryland is now 7 days old and I have already harvested 7 deer. Wow, as I think to myself how I have gotten here. Lots of hard work and scouting this summer is what I can tell you. By doing my scouting and homework I praticually knew what all the deer where doing at all my spots. I started off by shooting a buck I had watched all summer long named Curly, and also a doe. Opening evening put two on the board, and then on the following Tuesday I knocked another doe down.

Feeling pretty good and now sitting at 3 deer in 3 hunts I had to take a day to catch up with work and stuff. I got all my gear together and.cleaned up some arrows as I got prepared for my next hunt Thursday morning. I felt pretty good as I climbed up in stand Thursday morning, the air was cool, the wind good, and I was ready to shoot more deer. Not long after opening light I had 3 doe come feeding through and I was able to take the largest of the bunch. Then about a half hour later I had another two come by and I smoked the largest one again. Oh yeah my first double of the year had just gone down.

Now that my morning hunt was done I was on the run as I had lots to do before I had to meet my good buddy Will Jenkins for an evening hunt. I was so busy with work that day that it flew by and before I knew it I was meeting Will. He quickly got all his stuff together and transfered it to my truck and we were off. I took Will to his stand and made sure he was good to go, and then I got myself ready for the hunt. I was hunting a spot for the first time this year that was a pretty good one from last year. I had just put the camera up on Tuesday so I had no idea what to expect. Not long after I was in stand I had an emergency work call that I had to handle whick kept me on the phone for almost half an hour. I thought my night was over until I heard all the noise coming from the brush, and all of a sudden I could see legs moving. Oh yeah it was on, and I watched as about a.dozen deer moved from the brush into the woods. These deer didnt come right in, I had to watch as the lead big doe circled down wind and the rest followed. She came all the way in and ended up right below my stand. As she stood there I got more nervous, especially as I watched all the other deer filter into the area but I had my sights set on her. I kept my eyes on her as I knew she’d be the one to mess it up if any did. I not sure how many deer ended up in front of me but I kept my eyes on her. She finally calmed down a little and got into a position for a shot. When I released my arrow the woods exploded with deer as they took off everywhere. It was unreal how it went down and just so hard to put into words. All I can say is the last thing I heard was my doe crashing around. I threw my fists in the air in celebration as I was so pumped I had pulled that off. As my heart beat finally slowed I went ahead and sat down to try and calm myself from all the excitement. I sat there thinking and hoping that Will was having the same success as me. While I pondering with my thoughts I was sure I heard a doe bleat. I looked up and started scanning the woods and damned if I wasn’t right, he.came a lone doe looking for her crew. She continued to walk directly at me bleating all the way. I got up, grabbed my bow and got myself ready. The doe came in and when I got the shot I took it. She ran about 15 yards and just stood there wondering what had happened. As she tried to figure it out so no sooner fell to the ground. YES I had done it, another double.

Wow what a day, I had never done that before, I just had one of the best days bowhunting that I had ever had. Come to find out a little later, Will had harvested a good deer as well. The day couldn’t of gotten any better. What a great start to the season for both of us. I was really excited to help Will get a deer since the past couple years had been hard on him. Just goes to show what hard work and scouting can do for you. I surely hope that everyone has the same success as I’ve had so far this year. Please share your outdoor stories with me as well. Happy hunting.
